What is Market structure shift (MSS)?

A market structure shift is price breaking a swing level against the existing trend, taken as an early sign the trend may be changing direction.

What does Market structure shift (MSS) mean in practice?

Where a break of structure confirms the trend, a shift goes the other way: in an uptrend, a close below the most recent swing low. It is read as the first evidence that the sequence of higher highs and higher lows has stopped.

It is a warning and not a reversal. Many shifts are followed by the old trend resuming, and in range-bound markets structure flips constantly. As with a break of structure, the swing definition and close-versus-wick rule decide everything.

A worked example

Illustrative only: an uptrend has a swing low at 98. A candle closes at 97.4, below it. Under the rule, that is a market structure shift.

How to read or test it

Use the same swing definition as your break-of-structure rule so the two are consistent. Count how many shifts led to a real change of direction and how many were followed by the old trend resuming, and look at the sizes of the moves as well as the counts. Check ranging markets separately, where structure flips often, because a rule that works in trends can churn badly in a range. Keep a log of every shift you counted, including the ones you would rather forget.

How AKQX handles Market structure shift (MSS)

AKQX detects structure shifts as configurable blocks, which can gate an entry on a faster timeframe so the idea is testable end to end.

See ICT and SMC algo builder for the feature page.

A common mistake

Treating the first shift as a confirmed reversal and ignoring how often trends resume.
