What is Liquidity sweep?

A liquidity sweep is a brief move beyond an obvious high or low that takes out resting stop orders, followed by price reversing back inside the range.

What does Liquidity sweep mean in practice?

Stop orders cluster just beyond obvious highs and lows. A move through that level triggers them, and the resulting orders can briefly supply the liquidity larger participants need. If price then fails to continue and returns inside the range, the move is described as a sweep.

The difficulty is that a sweep is only recognisable once price has reversed. In real time a break above a high looks identical whether it becomes a sweep or the start of a real breakout, so a testable rule has to define in advance what counts as a reversal.

A worked example

Illustrative only: a prior high sits at 105. Price trades to 105.4, then closes back at 104.2 within two candles. Under a rule defining a sweep as a close back inside within two candles, this qualifies.

How to read or test it

Define the level, the breach and the reversal in numbers: which highs and lows count, how far beyond them price must trade, and how many candles it has to close back inside by. Run that rule across history and count the cases that reversed against the cases that continued. A rule that cannot lose, because every failure is relabelled a different pattern, tells you nothing.

How AKQX handles Liquidity sweep

AKQX includes liquidity-level and sweep detection as configurable blocks, so the definition is written down and the result can be backtested rather than judged by eye.

See ICT and SMC algo builder for the feature page.

A common mistake

Calling every failed breakout a sweep after the fact, which makes the concept unfalsifiable.
