What is Donchian channel?
A Donchian channel plots the highest high and lowest low over the last N periods; a close beyond either edge is used as a breakout signal.
What does Donchian channel mean in practice?
The upper line is the highest high of the last N candles and the lower line the lowest low. A close above the upper line is a new N-period high, which a breakout strategy reads as a possible start of a trend. The middle is sometimes drawn as the average of the two.
It is a classic trend-following tool because it is simple and fully mechanical: there are no subjective choices beyond N. The weakness is the same as any breakout rule. In ranging markets it produces repeated false breakouts, so it needs testing on the market and timeframe you intend to use.
A worked example
Illustrative only: with N = 20, the highest high over the last 20 candles is 110. A candle closing at 110.5 breaks above the channel and triggers the rule.
How to read or test it
Test a range of N values rather than a single one and look at the shape of the results: a broad plateau is reassuring, while one good value surrounded by poor ones is a sign of fitting. Test it on the specific market and timeframe you intend to trade, and compare trending and ranging periods separately. Remember that breakout rules usually have a low win rate and rely on a few large winners.
How AKQX handles Donchian channel
AKQX's strategy library includes a Donchian breakout strategy on a 20-period channel. Treat it as a starting point for your own testing, not a recommendation.
See No-code algo strategy builder for the feature page.
A common mistake
Using the textbook value of N without checking it on your own market and timeframe.
